Final Major Project PHO705 Week 12: The confusion of Aunty
In many Caribbean households referring to our elders as Aunty or Uncle is customary, it’s typically a sign of respect. It is something that is usually reserved for close family friends or those who are around throughout our childhood.
This has both positive and negative implications; I assume that this is associated with the need for the displaced people to create a community and family where they may otherwise not have one.
The warmth that I have referred to earlier can be displayed in situations like this with every generation it seems to dissipate slightly. In my youth I remember extended family members coming around to spend Christmas with us, family get-togethers and a variety of other interactions that seems to be no more.
Whereas this extended network of a family is positive in many ways; it also has several negatives and the confusion of this never been clearly explained can be somewhat problematic.
